Muscular Weakness

Physical therapists (PTs) play a crucial role in helping children with muscle weakness improve their strength, mobility, and overall function.

Strengthening

PTs use a combination of active exercises (where the child actively moves their muscles) and passive exercises (where the therapist moves the child’s limbs for them) to improve muscle strength. Exercises are often incorporated into functional tasks, such as climbing stairs, reaching for objects, or playing games, making them more engaging and relevant to the child’s daily life.  Therapists might use resistance bands, weights, or even the child’s own body weight to challenge and strengthen the muscles.

Motor Skills Development

PTs work on improving balance and coordination, which are often affected by muscle weakness. This might include activities like core strengthening for sitting balance, standing on one leg, hopping, or catching a ball. These exercises focus on larger movements, such as walking, running, jumping, or climbing, to help the child develop overall motor skills and improve their ability to participate in physical activities.

Adaptive Equipment

In some cases, PTs may recommend or design orthotics, braces, or other supportive devices to help the child maintain proper alignment, reduce strain on weak muscles, or prevent contractures.  Depending on the severity of the muscle weakness, the child might benefit from using assistive devices like walkers, gait trainers, or wheelchairs to enhance their mobility.

Play and Fun

Especially for younger children, PTs often incorporate play into their sessions to keep the child engaged and motivated.  Activities like obstacle courses, games, or creative movements make therapy enjoyable and less intimidating.
