Empowering Feeding & Swallowing

Speech Therapy’s Impact on Feeding Challenges

For many parents, watching their child struggle with feeding and swallowing can be distressing. But here’s some comforting news, speech therapy for swallowing challenges is a proven solution for various childhood conditions. Beyond just the domain of speech, this therapy plays a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life by addressing feeding and swallowing difficulties.

Many children encounter occasional feeding and swallowing issues, but some face consistent challenges affecting their nutrition, hydration, and overall well-being. Conditions like dysphagia, certain developmental disorders, or complications from premature birth can all lead to feeding and swallowing challenges. These issues can transform mealtime from a delightful bonding moment to a period of stress and concern.

At The Pediatric Place in Clinton and Knob Noster, MO, our pediatric speech therapists don’t just focus on communication barriers but dive deep into disorders related to feeding and swallowing. Using various techniques tailored to each child’s unique needs, our speech therapists work diligently to identify issues in the structure and function of the child’s oral mechanism that may be impacting feeding and swallowing challenges.

At The Pediatric Place, our speech therapists work alongside occupational therapists, board certified behavior analysts, and registered dietitians for a collaborative approach to feeding challenges.

If you’re witnessing signs of persistent choking, coughing, food refusal, poor weight gain, or fatigue during meals, it might be more than just picky eating. Reading further can offer insights into these challenges and illuminate the pathway forward!

Common Conditions Addressed by a Feeding Team for Feeding Challenges

When we think of speech therapy for feeding challenges, but at TPP we believe a team approach is needed to treat the whole child and support the parents/caregivers.  By involving occupational therapists, physical therapists, registered dietitians, behavior analysts, and speech therapists, you can be assured your child is assessed from every angle to obtain the correct etiology, development of a collaborative treatment plan, with the end result being a healthy relationship with food, meal-time success, and healthy growth. Feeding and swallowing issues, often medical in nature, are quite common in children, and understanding them is the first step in seeking effective treatment.

Common Conditions:

Poor latch on the breast at birth

Babies with a poor latch refers to the baby’s ineffective or incorrect attachment to the breast, which can cause various complications and challenges for mother and child.

Chronic spitting-up and/or acid reflux

Chronic spit-up in babies, also known as gastroesophageal reflux (GER), can cause nutritional concerns, discomfort and pain, esophageal irritation, respiratory issues, as well as feeding challenges.

Mouth breathing & poor oral resting posture

Oral breathing displaces the structures and muscles needed to articulate, manage food and saliva, elicit proper cranial and facial growth, efficient swallow, and breathe nasally.  Our therapists are trained to identify oral breathing, refer out for upper airway resistance, then habilitate patent nasal breathing and proper oral resting posture.

Picky eaters/problem feeders

Children who have a very narrow repertoire of foods they accept in their diet, as well as having very rigid feeding routines.  This can be caused by a traumatic incident with food, difficulty managing and manipulating the food in the mouth for a safe and efficient swallow, and/or structural abnormalities such as enlarged tonsils and/or adenoids, all creating anxiety and fear with different food textures, flavors, and temperatures.

Dysphagia

Quite simply, this is a fancy term for ‘difficulty in swallowing.’ It can mean your child takes longer to chew and swallow food or even liquid. Sometimes, it could stem from muscle weakness or coordination problems.

Oral Aversion

Some kids develop an aversion to anything touching their mouth, be it food, a toothbrush, or even a toy. This might be due to negative experiences like choking or force-feeding.

Aspiration

This is when food or drink enters the windpipe instead of going down the esophagus. It can sometimes cause coughing or even pneumonia if not addressed.

Signs to Watch For:

  • Milk or formula leaking from the corners of the mouth.
  • Loss of suction at the breast resulting in clicking sound.
  • Excess of gas and bloating.
  • Consistent coughing or choking during meals.
  • Avoiding certain textures or types of food.
  • Unexplained weight loss or slow growth.
  • Wet-sounding voice after eating or drinking.
  • Restrictions in the number of tolerated foods.
  • Difficulty sitting in the high chair causing slumping to the side, sliding down in the chair, and/or frequent need to get up out of the chair.
  • Poor tolerance of tummy time.
  • Fatiguing during meals.
  • Eating small amounts of food even though child appears to be very hungry.
  • Difficulty using utensils.

While any child could face feeding and swallowing challenges, those with neurological disorders, premature birth, or those who’ve experienced severe reflux as babies might be more prone.

While these conditions may sound daunting, the silver lining is the efficacy of TPPs feeding team in the evaluation and treatment in managing and often fully resolving these challenges. Armed with knowledge, expert training, and a lot of heart, our therapists craft individualized plans to navigate these challenges, ensuring your child’s safety and comfort.

navigating pediatric feeding through a team approach

Every parent dreams of seeing their child thrive, effortlessly enjoying life’s simple pleasures, but unfortunately, when faced with feeding and swallowing challenges, the act of enjoying a meal can become daunting. The good news? With TPP’s feeding team, there’s hope on the horizon!  We recognize that input from pediatric occupational therapists, speech therapists, behavior interventionists, and registered dietitians is vital to treating pediatric feeding disorders.

Your child’s journey will typically commence with a comprehensive evaluation from our speech therapists assessing your child’s oral structure and the function of resting, speaking, and swallowing. This isn’t just about understanding the problem; it’s about getting to know your child, their unique challenges, and their strengths. A customized treatment plan to target their specific needs is created from there.

Effective Treatment Techniques:

  • Oral Motor Training: This strengthens the muscles of the mouth, making it easier to move food to the back of the throat.
  • Sensory Integration: For kids with aversions, this method helps them get accustomed to various textures and sensations.
  • Dietary Recommendations: Sometimes, it’s about altering the consistency or texture of food to ensure safer swallowing.
  • Breathing Techniques: These are crucial for coordinating breathing with swallowing to prevent aspiration.

In addition to in-clinic sessions, our dedicated therapists empower parents with knowledge. Expect to learn exercises and activities that can be safely practiced at home, turning therapy into a fun bonding session!

What sets The Pediatric Place apart is our commitment to individualized care. Our therapists not only bring their expertise to the table but also their heart. With the right blend of knowledge and compassion, we ensure your child receives the best care tailored to their needs.
