At The Pediatric Place in Clinton and Knob Noster, MO, our pediatric therapy team is dedicated to understanding the unique needs of your child and creating a tailored treatment plan to help them enjoy an active and fulfilling childhood.
Here’s a checklist of things you’ll need for your child’s first appointment
- Arrival Time: Please arrive 15 minutes early for your child’s initial visit to allow time for paperwork completion.
- Questions: Prepare a list of questions or concerns you’d like to discuss during your first meeting with our pediatric physical therapist.
- Documents: Don’t forget to bring essential documents, including your child’s photo ID and a copy of your insurance card.
- Insurance Verification: Prior to your appointment, contact our office to confirm your insurance benefits.
- Medical History: Be ready to provide information about your child’s medical history, past treatments, current medications, and any other relevant details.
- Symptoms and Limitations: Create a list of your child’s symptoms or limitations, including specific situations that are difficult for your child during their daily activities.
The more information you can provide about your child’s difficulties, the better our pediatric therapists can assess and address their needs.
What to Expect at The Pediatric Place During Your Child’s First Appointment
- Check-In: Upon arrival at our pediatric therapy clinic, you’ll need to check in at the front desk. We’ll collect insurance information and any paperwork you’ve brought along, such as referrals and any other medical reports or documents.
- Initial Evaluation: Your child’s first appointment will include an initial evaluation by one of our pediatric therapists. During this evaluation, our therapist will gather a comprehensive medical history and assess your child’s current condition, as well as your concerns. Honest and open communication is crucial to understanding your child’s needs fully. For mental health evaluation, the initial visit takes place with the therapist and child only. This is followed up with a second evaluation (the following week) with the therapist and the parent/caregiver only.
- Physical Examination: Depending on the concerns of the parent, physician, and/or child, our pediatric therapists may perform a thorough physical examination (i.e. physical therapy, feeding therapy and oral exam, sensory assessment, etc.). Based on these findings, they will develop a personalized therapy plan for your child.
- Discussion: The therapist will explain their findings and provide information about the evaluation. They will also offer education and may trial therapeutic techniques at the initial visit. Each subsequent session will build upon the initial evaluation for the most significant impact.
- Goal Setting: We’ll discuss your child’s goals and determine the recommended frequency and duration of their therapy sessions based on clinical expertise and reasoning.
- Documentation: Our pediatric therapists will document their findings and treatment plan, which can be shared with other medical professionals of your choice. The primary aim of our treatments is to expedite your child’s recovery and achieve lasting, meaningful results.
- Scheduling: Before leaving your child’s initial appointment at The Pediatric Place, you’ll arrange the remaining sessions at the front desk. Our goal is to make visits easy and convenient for the parent/guardian. If the child is seen for multiple disciplines (i.e. physical therapy, occupational therapy, ABA, etc.) we strive to place appointments as close together as we can, limiting the number of trips to and from the clinic as possible.
Should you have any further questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us anytime.

Cash-Based Pediatric Therapy at The Pediatric Place
At The Pediatric Place, we’re dedicated to providing you with the highest quality of care, and we believe that the cash-based pediatric therapy model allows us to prioritize your needs above all else.
In this model, you make direct payments for your pediatric therapy services instead of relying on insurance reimbursement.
We’ve chosen to implement this approach for several important reasons:
- Improved Patient-Therapist Relationship: Without insurance constraints, we can focus on exactly what your child needs. Your child’s therapy won’t be arbitrarily stopped, and the therapy process won’t be complicated by third-party approvals.
- Control Over Services: We can tailor your child’s treatment based on their unique needs, not what an insurance company is willing to cover. This means more freedom for us to provide your child with the best possible care.
- Simpler Billing: Removing insurance companies from the equation simplifies the billing process. We can spend more time helping you and your child and less time dealing with paperwork, claims, and follow-ups.
- Price Transparency: In a cash-based model, you know the cost of your child’s treatment upfront, leading to fewer financial surprises and better planning.
- Lower Overall Costs: Research shows that cash-based pediatric therapy often requires fewer visits than traditional insurance-based models. This results in lower overall costs for you.
We understand that some patients may prefer to use their insurance coverage, and we do provide that option.
However, we believe that offering a cash-based model empowers you to make choices that align with your child’s unique needs and goals.

Clearing Up Misconceptions
Understanding Direct Access for Pediatric Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and/or Speech Therapy
The term “Direct Access” may not be widely known outside the physical therapy field, and there might be some misconceptions about what it entails. It’s essential to recognize that the healthcare landscape is evolving, with Direct Access becoming increasingly accessible to patients.
Direct Access allows patients to access pediatric physical, occupational and/or speech therapy services more quickly, reducing waiting times, lowering costs, and enhancing convenience for both patients and the healthcare system. Most importantly, it accelerates recovery.
Scheduling appointments directly with pediatric therapists is prevalent across various therapy settings, including outpatient physical therapy, pediatrics, private home care, school districts, hospitals, and sports fields. Contrary to common belief, Direct Access is available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, allowing patients greater control over their healthcare decisions.
While Direct Access may have some limitations, it has paved the way for regulatory revisions to ensure patients receive timely care.
Understanding How Direct Access Laws Affect Health Insurance
Navigating health insurance plans can be complex, with each carrier and plan having its unique features. While it might not get simpler anytime soon, the good news is that Direct Access is covered by many private health insurance carriers. However, it’s crucial to verify what your insurance covers in your specific case.
Rest assured, your pediatric therapist maintains regular communication with your child’s physician. The pediatric therapist will submit a treatment plan, which will be reviewed and approved by a licensed doctor. Fortunately, Medicare covers the cost of services when a physical therapist develops a treatment plan.
Opting for Direct Access to pediatric physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy offers several advantages. Patients often report higher satisfaction levels when accessing physical therapy directly, without a physician referral. Furthermore, patients who use Direct Access tend to experience better outcomes during their treatment.
