In January, we had the opportunity to support an individual facing a major barrier: lack of dependable transportation. In a household of three adults sharing one vehicle, daily life had become increasingly difficult when that vehicle became unsafe to drive due to brake issues. Without reliable transportation, even basic responsibilities — including attending important medical appointments — became a challenge.
The individual originally reached out seeking help to cover the cost of brake repairs. As we listened and learned more about their situation, it became clear that an additional barrier existed: they had no way to get the vehicle to the repair shop for evaluation or service. By thinking creatively and meeting them where they were, we were able to secure a truck and trailer to transport the vehicle and connect them with a local shop. Together, we also discussed setting up a manageable payment plan so repairs could move forward in a sustainable way.
This support allowed the household access to two vehicles, easing a significant burden and restoring a sense of stability. It is a powerful example of what the Family First Initiative represents — going beyond financial assistance to provide real, practical solutions that remove barriers and create pathways forward.
