Introducing ABA Services at The Pediatric Place

April 1st, 2024

By Amy Wolcott, M.S. CCC-SLP

The Pediatric Place is excited to announce Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services at our Clinton location! Applied behavior analysis is designed for children with severe behavioral challenges secondary to neurodevelopmental diagnoses.

What is ABA therapy?

“While mostly known as a therapy for individuals diagnosed with autism, ABA is so much more,” explained Brooke Allen, Board Certified Behavior Analyst and Director of TPP’s Autism and Neurodevelopmental Center, slated to open in June. “ABA can address social skills, academics, communication, functional/self-help skills, toilet training, sleep struggles, and more.”

ABA practitioners seek to build communication, social, and functional skills to enable children to reduce or replace maladaptive behaviors (e.g., self-injury, noncompliance, wandering, physical aggression, etc.). Children receive anywhere from 2 to 40 hours of services per week, based on their unique needs. ABA therapists also meet weekly with parents or caregivers to discuss strategies to carry over goals at home.

Goals are incorporated into “natural environment training” (NET), so that sessions mirror the real world. Therapists work clients’ favorite play activities into learning to encourage motivation and increase generalization of skills.

Why is TPP the perfect setting for ABA therapy?

Children who benefit from ABA often exhibit delays in multiple areas of development. TPP’s multidisciplinary model means that kids can receive all the services they need in one convenient location. Additionally, the opportunity for therapists to collaborate results in a cohesive plan of care tailored to each child’s needs.

“Having the ability to walk right down the hallway to ask a counselor a question, pick the brain of an SLP, or make a referral to our dietitian is key to comprehensive ABA programming, particularly with those diagnosed with ASD,” Brooke explained.

Meet our Board Certified Behavior Analysts!

Brooke Allen, BCBA Director

Brooke Allen has practiced as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) since 2006 upon the completion of her Master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. It has been Brooke’s passion to ensure learners are provided opportunities to make their world larger through access to inclusive settings with equal opportunities in the community and schools. Her career aspirations have focused on the growth of ASD programs, implementing ABA across a variety of settings including community, home, private and public schools, clinics, and universities. Brooke enjoys spending time with her husband, Seth, and their three children (Caiden, Savannah, and Millie); traveling; watching movies; and narrating the thoughts of their dog, Molly! Each and every day, Brooke approaches her career with the mindset that “you were given your gift for the joy you may give in return.”
